“I have always been fascinated by liminal spaces; the eerily empty ones have always captured my attention. They make me imagine the thousands of stories that might have unfolded there and how they have stood as silent witnesses to everyday life—yet, despite being empty, a strange energy lingers within them. It can be seen, felt, and, above all, heard.”
“Liminal Spaces” draws direct inspiration from the “Backrooms” internet phenomenon and a fascination with environments that are empty, desolate, or removed from their usual context. It seeks to evoke the strange calm and subtle unease triggered by transitional places—such as endless corridors, vacant hotels, or abandoned shopping malls—when stripped of human presence.
As both a violist and violinist, Carlos Bonilla blends the melancholic warmth of classical strings with electronic and ambient textures to create minimalist atmospheres.
The tracks are numbered sequentially (from “Space 1” and “Space 2” up to “Space 9”), simulating a walk through different “rooms” or levels of sonic isolation.
This release solidifies his exploration of conceptual and instrumental music, complementing the evolution seen in his previous albums, such as *Inner Journey* (2024) and *Lights and Shadows* (2025).
